There are a total of fourteen playable characters in Risk of Rain 2. Many of these characters need to be unlocked by completing challenges. Within the breakdown of each character are steps on how to unlock all characters for Risk of Rain 2.

Acrid
Acrid, a formidable ex-prisoner, towers over foes as a poison-spewing menace. Their arsenal boasts potent damage-over-time effects and a self-sustaining melee prowess. Notably, Acrid wields the highest base damage stat among Survivors, second only to the enigmatic Heretic. This blend of long-range attacks and crowd control ensures exceptional damage output. What truly sets Acrid apart is their ability to inflict either Poisoned or Blight status effects. This unique trait makes Acrid a deadly choice, especially when stacking items that amplify debuffs. Beware—their venomous touch leaves adversaries reeling!

- Unlock: Acrid can be unlocked by completing the "...To Be Left Alone" challenge. To complete this challenge you must beat the 9 challenge cells in the Void Fields. The Void Fields can be found by activating the Null Portal found in the Bazaar Between Time.
Artificer
Artificer, armed with a diverse array of destructive skills, excels in offense—capable of shattering even the sturdiest foes. Her secret weapon? The versatile Snapfreeze. However, this formidable power comes at a price: her survivability is compromised. Lacking defensive or movement abilities beyond her soaring Ion Surge, Artificer demands a skilled player who can deftly dodge attacks and remain hyper-aware of their surroundings.
Bandit
The Bandit, a nimble and elusive combatant, thrives on perpetual motion—darting through the chaos to catch foes off balance and unleash devastating havoc. His arsenal is a symphony of lethal tools: Daggers: Swift and precise, they slice through the air, leaving trails of crimson. Smoke Bombs: He vanishes into the haze, reappearing where least expected. Gun Attacks: His shots echo like thunder, punctuating the chaos. Yet, the Bandit’s true prowess lies in his adaptability. He dances between blades, smoke, and gunfire, emphasizing mobility and versatility. But beware—the path to unlocking his full potential demands skill, finesse, and a keen eye for opportunity.

- Unlock: Bandit can be unlocked by completing the "Warrior" challenge. This challenge is automatically completed when you beat the teleporter event on the third state for the first time. Once you have completed the teleporter event, you will have unlocked Bandit.
Captain
Aboard the UES Safe Travels, the Captain wields a formidable power: the ability to summon an array of tactical drops from orbit. These range from the unassuming healing beacons to the awe-inspiring cataclysmic OGM-72 ‘DIABLO’ Strike.

- Unlock: Captain can be unlocked by completing the "Washed Away" challenge. For completion of this challenge you must defeat the final boss and beat the game. Upon completion you will have unlocked the Captain.
Commando
Unlocked from the outset, the Commando character is meticulously designed to be a versatile and intuitively comprehensible figure. Devoid of any glaring weaknesses or overbearing strengths, he seamlessly blends agility with offensive prowess in his strategic maneuvers. Beneath the seemingly straightforward skillset lies a hidden advantage: Commando thrives on the synergistic effects of item stacking, capitalizing on his rapid attack speed and equally formidable power

Engineer
The Engineer’s prowess lies not solely within himself, but rather in his adeptness at establishing an array of defensive measures through deployable gadgets. His signature ability involves creating deployable turrets that inherit the same items he possesses. This uniqueness means that item selection isn’t solely about benefiting himself; it also extends to what can enhance the capabilities of his turrets.

- Unlock: Engineer can be unlocked by completing the "Engineering Perfection" challenge. This requires that the player complete 30 stages. These completed stages will carry over from previous runs. Once you have completed a total of 30 stages total, you will unlock Engineer.
Heretic
The enigmatic Heretic eludes initial selection from the character roster at the outset of a run. Instead, she emerges through a transformation process—wield all four Heresy items simultaneously to unlock her presence. These items, each imbued with unique abilities, form the crux of her power: Visions of Heresy: Replaces her primary skill with Hungering Gaze—a flurry of tracking shards that detonate, dealing 120% base damage. The charges reload swiftly, granting tactical flexibility. Hooks of Heresy: Substitutes her secondary skill with Slicing Maelstrom—a charged projectile that inflicts 875% damage per second to nearby foes, culminating in a powerful explosion and a 3-second root effect. Strides of Heresy: Her utility skill becomes Shadowfade, allowing her to fade away, gain intangibility, and move at +30% speed while healing based on her maximum health. This effect lasts for a customizable duration. Essence of Heresy: Replaces her special skill with Ruin, which accumulates stacks upon dealing damage. Activating this skill detonates all Ruin stacks, dealing substantial damage based on the number of stacks. Beyond her skillset, the Heretic boasts exceptionally high base health, the ability to triple jump, and a swifter pace than her fellow Survivors. However, her negative health regeneration means she gradually loses health over time, defying the usual recovery process

Huntress

By default, the Huntress is an alternative choice to the dependable Commando.

Loader
The Loader, a formidable fusion of mobility and sheer strength, maneuvers through the battlefield with grace. Her cargo-laden frame conceals an arsenal of devastating attacks, each delivered with precision. Harnessing her velocity as an asset, she effortlessly dispatches powerful adversaries in a single, bone-crushing punch.

- Unlock: Loader can be unlocked by completing the "Guidance Offline" challenge. This challenge requires that you defeat the Alloy Worship Unit in Siren's call. You can spawn a Alloy Worship Unit by destroying six Alloy Vulture nests in Siren's call. Once you have destroyed these nests, the Alloy Worship Unit will spawn in the open area of the map, allowing you to unlock Loader.
MUL-T
MUL-T, the modified multi-purpose robot, truly lives up to its designation with remarkable versatility. Its robust construction ensures both high health and formidable armor. What sets it apart is its distinctive capability: the ability to choose two out of four primary weapons and deploy them in two distinct configurations. It can either seamlessly switch between two weapons and equipment using the Retool function or wield two primary weapons simultaneously in the formidable Power Mode. Truly a marvel of engineering!

- Unlock: MUL-T can be unlocked by completing the "Verified" challenge. This challenge requires that you complete the first teleporter event 5 times. Upon completion of the fifth teleporter event you will have unlocked MUL-T.
Mercenary
The Mercenary, a highly mobile and agile fighter, strikes with lightning speed to decimate enemies. His attacks grant him both invincibility and exceptional mobility. What sets him apart is his unique skillset: low cooldowns, which are further reduced by his signature Expose debuff. When he hits exposed enemies, their cooldowns decrease by a second, and the damage dealt increases by a whopping 350%. This synergy shapes his playstyle, emphasizing a relentless chain of attacks to maintain an offensive edge in any situation. Truly a force to be reckoned with!

- Unlock: Mercenary can be unlocked by completing the "True Respite" challenge. This challenge requires that you obilterate yourself at the Obelisk. The Obelisk can be found on the last floating island where it can be interacted with.
REX
REX, a formidable combatant, wields attacks of immense power that reach across vast distances. However, there’s a trade-off: some of these attacks draw from REX’s own health reserves. To maintain REX’s effectiveness in battle, precise timing of skills and astute health management are essential. Beyond health-stealing abilities and adept group control, REX can also weaken opponents, enhancing both damage dealt and personal resilience. A strategic force to reckon with!

- Unlock: REX can be unlocked by completing the "Power Plant" challenge. For this challenge you will need a Fuel Array which can be found in an escape pod. With the Fuel Array you will be able to repair the Broken Robot in the Abyssal Depths. Upon completion of this challenge you will have unlocked REX.
Railgunner
Meet the Railgunner, a lethal and masterful markswoman who wields her eponymous railgun with precision. Her arsenal combines devastating piercing shots and intelligent homing rounds, resulting in unparalleled long-range damage output. But that’s not all—she also excels at crowd control, deftly managing chaotic situations. However, her pièce de résistance lies in the form of the Supercharge: an all-or-nothing ability capable of obliterating even the hardiest foes with a single, cataclysmic shot. Beware when facing this formidable force on the battlefield!

- Unlock: Void Fiend can be unlocked by completing the "Dragged Below" challenge. There are three ways to complete this challenge. The first is by defeating the boss of the Planetarium, the second is by reaching the ending and lastly you can complete 50 waves of the Simulacrum.
